There are at present seven levels for adults. These start from absolute beginner to near native speaker standard - such as might be required by universities in Britain or the United States for Masters programmes in Humanities. When a student performs well within a level he or she moves up to the next; or if a student fìnds diffìculty keeping up with other students of that level then he or she moves down to the level below. This system is supported by a non-time-consuming but effective testing regime.
Learning a second language (or a third one) is not easy. Many of you may have attended English lessons at school for several years but do not feel that you can have even a basic conversation, although you may be able to run through certain verbs and recognise a great many nouns. At IH we aim to empower people to speak English, rather than use if as if it were a mathematical system. Lessons concentrate on communication activities. Students solve problems and play games in English as well as tackling serious academic matters. Lessons are, with great relevance to motivation, fun.
Everyone learns a language in his or her own way, but there are certain things all students can do to help themselves to learn. We ask all our students to buy a dictionary, keep all materials and constantly review them, do their homework, access as much English media as possible (TV, DVDs, magazines etc.), and use the school as a resource as much as they have time to do so. |
